What is Christian music?

Christian music encompasses all styles of music that are composed of Christian themes, whatever their movements and approaches. Praise and liturgical music is an important part of this music.

Christian singing, accompanied by musical instruments and based on the Book of Psalms, is one of the first styles of Christian music1. Then Gregorian chant was introduced in churches. In the United States, the 19th century saw the emergence of negro spiritual and gospel music in the 20th century. In 1964, the Gospel Music Association was founded in Nashville. In 1969, the Dove Awards, a Christian musical award ceremony, was founded in Memphis, Tennessee.

Contemporary Christian music includes various styles of music that have developed both outside and within these communities. Christian artists nowadays practice all styles of music: from Christian pop, Christian rock to Christian hip-hop, Christian punk and Christian metal. In the 1980s and 1990s, contemporary Christian music took a considerable place in evangelical Christian cults. A wide variety of musical styles have developed traditional worship.
