Turin Brakes is a British pop music duet with folk accents from Balham (London).

The two members of the group Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian have known each other since elementary school when they begin to sing together at the age of ten in the choir of the local cathedral. They meet later to record their first EP, The Door, released in 1999, limited edition on the label Anvil Records. The latter draws the attention of larger labels and they quickly release two new EP at the label Source: The State of Things and Fight or Flight.

Source is releasing the song "The Door" before the release of their debut album The Optimist LP. The album is also marketed in the United States thanks to the Astralwerks label. The album is named at the Mercury Music Prize. A tour is planned in the United States, opening Stereophonics and Matthew Jay, but it is finally canceled following the attacks of September 11, 2001.
