Emperor

Emperor is a Norwegian black metal band from Notodden, Telemark County. Formed in 1991, the group is considered one of the pioneers of symphonic black metal >>>>>. It separates in 2001, then meets in 2005 until 2007, for some dates of North-American tours, then meets again in 2014. The group is founded by Ihsahn (guitar and vocals) and Samoth (guitar).

Emperor started in 1991 with Samoth (drums and guitar), Ihsahn (guitar and vocals) and Mortiis (bass)>. Previously a death metal band, named Thou Shalt Suffer, the band adopts the black metal style and its current name when Ihsahn and Samoth meet Euronymous around 1991. The first demo, Wrath of the Tyrant (1992) draws the attention of the record company Candlelight. The end of the same year followed the eponymous Emperor demo. Soon after, the group signs a contract that allows them to go out Emperor split with Hordanes Land , from Enslaved. Samoth now takes care of the guitar, Ihsahn's vocals and guitar and Bård Faust joins the band on drums. Mortiis leaves the band to take care of his ambient music project and is replaced by Tchort. Emperor then begins work on their first full-length album, In the Nightside Eclipse , in the summer of 1993. The group, at this point, begins to make shows in Norway and England.

Following a series of events in Norway in 1992 and 1993 (murders, church fires), Samoth is incarcerated for arson and Bård Faust for murder. Chort is also driven to leave the group as a result of a police investigation (he will never be incarcerated, but will not return to Emperor). The group is now in suspense, remaining qu'Ihsahn free, which continues nevertheless to compose for a possible next album. The latter does not condemn then the fire of church of Samoth, as it says it in an interview in 1995>. After Samoth's release, Trym (former Enslaved band member) joins the group on drums as well as Alver on bass and the band starts rolling again. Emperor thus launches Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk in early 1997. The fifth track of the album, The Loss and Curse of Reverence is arranged shortly after in a video, among one of the first in black metal. Several magazines specializing in extreme metal, such as Terrorizer , and Metal Maniacs < / span >> awarded Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk the album title of the year. Alver leaves the group soon after the release of Anthems . The group, then reduced to three members (Ihsahn doing the bass), recorded IX Equilibrium and toured Europe and the United States. US>.

In 2000, Samoth and Trym decided to go more towards death metal (Zyklon group formation), while Ihsahn explores the more artistic and progressive sides of extreme music, as demonstrated by his project Peccatum with his wife Ihriel. The band decided to dissolve in 2001, after the release of their final album, Prometheus: the Discipline of Fire and Demise , an album composed entirely by Ihsahn >. After this album, the Norwegian formation separates for personal and judicial reasons, and as a result of the musical differences already mentioned. Since then, Samoth and Trym played black / death metal with the band Zyklon (2003-2006). In 2005, Samoth was part of the thrash metal band Scum where he played as a guitarist, accompanied by Bård Faust, former Emperor drummer and released in 2004, and Casey Chaos from American punk rock band Amen. He founded The Wretched End (death / thrash metal). Ihsahn, having released some albums for Peccatum, embarks on a solo career. On October 1, 2005, the group announces its return on stage, at least for some concerts. Among other things, the formation appears at the head of the festival Inferno of Norway, as well as at the metal festival, the Wacken Open Air in 2006>, as well as the Hellfest in France in 2007.
