Cui jian

Cui Jian (崔健) is a Chinese rock musician born in 1961 in Beijing.

Cui Jian and his music are popular with Chinese youth and convey a political message. Cui is one of the first Chinese musicians to have abandoned classical music conventions as they existed until Mao Zedong's death in 1976.

Cui Jian grew up in a family of musicians in Beijing. His mother was a member of a Korean dance troupe and his father was a professional trumpet player. He set himself on the trumpet at fourteen and played at the Beijing Philharmonic Orchestra in 1981, at the age of twenty. It was at this time that he was confronted with rock, and began to play the guitar>

In 1984, he formed the Seven Ply Board with other classically trained musicians. This band was influenced by the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Talking Heads. They played their own tracks (temperate rock and mostly love songs) in local hotels and bars.
